The University of Maryland (UMD) and University of Maryland Baltimore County’s (UMBC) five-year ArtIAMAS cooperative agreement with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has received second-year funding of $10,375,000. Professor Derek Paley (AE/ISR), the director of the Maryland Robotics Center, is the lead researcher for the extensive project.

The $10.3M second-year funding is one of the largest single-year sponsored research awards for the Clark School of Engineering.

ArtIAMAS began in May 2021 and funding eventually is expected to reach $68 million. It focuses on safe, effective, and resilient capabilities and technologies that work intelligently and cooperatively with each other and humans. The research spans engineering, robotics, computer science, operations research, modeling and simulation, and cybersecurity. The agreement builds on a more than 25-year research partnership between UMD and ARL in AI, autonomy, and modeling and simulation.

“We are extremely pleased at the level of collaboration that has been established between university and ARL researchers,” says Paley. To date, the project has involved 109 ARL researchers, 64 UMD and UMBC researchers, and 117 students.
