Department of Aerospace Engineering Professor Norman Wereley has been named a 2026 Fellow by the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME). New CSME fellows are recognized for their excellence in mechanical engineering and outstanding contributions to the progress of the profession.
Wereley, a Minta Martin Professor of Aerospace Engineering, is an internationally recognized scholar in smart, composite, and cellular materials for occupant protection systems, magnetorheological fluids and devices, and pneumatic artificial muscles for morphing aircraft and robotic applications. His work has led to numerous innovations and applications in pilot and passenger safety for rotorcraft.
He has been recognized as a key architect behind the first-ever organ transplant delivery flight via a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone led by the University of Maryland.
Wereley has co-authored over 600 articles, eight edited books, 19 book chapters, and is the co-inventor of over 20 patents.
He is the recipient of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ (ASME) Adaptive Structure and Material Systems Award and The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) Lifetime Achievement Award in Smart Structures and Materials. He is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Institute of Physics, Royal Aeronautical Society, Vertical Flight Society, SPIE, and ASME, acknowledging his extensive technical and service contributions.
Wereley earned his B.Eng. '82 in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
CSME is a national professional organization founded in 1970 to advance mechanical engineering research, practice, and education in Canada. As a constituent society of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), CSME supports the mechanical engineering community through conferences, publications, technical exchange, professional development activities, and recognition of excellence through national awards.
